England’s chances of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup continue to be rosy after a 3-0 Wembley victory of Scotland yesterday evening.
Whilst much of the publicity pre-game was focused on both sides defying FIFA legislation by wearing a red poppy on their black armbands, the status of the two manager was subject of much of the post game talk. Gareth Southgate being linked to the permanent position now more than ever and Gordan Strachan seemingly very much at the end of his tenure follwing some rotten results.
Both sides contributed to an entertaining World Cup qualifier, however England’s superior finishing proved to be the defining factor in the meeting of the two old enemies.
The visitors started strongly, irritating the home side with the typical determination expected of them. Grant Hanley indeed came close to grabbing the games opener.
Despite their gusto, the Scots were quickly deflated when Daniel Sturridge guided in his header superbly after 24 minutes following a powerful Kyle Walker cross.
Southgate’s side persisted in playing a passing game from the back, however when continually harried by heavy pressing from their opponents.
James Forrest wasted yet another quilt edge chance, it was to be their undoing as Adam Lallana doubled the Three Lion’s lead when heading home Danny Rose’s cross.
By the time Gary Cahill made it a hat-trick of headers for England, Strachan and Scotland were already beaten men
The win means England now sit pretty at the top of Group F, two points ahead of nearest side Slovenia. The Scots however will be wondering were the much needed spark will come from as they now sit second from bottom.
