Premier League rivals West Ham United and Everton are set to face off come the re-opening of the transfer window in June, as both teams are thought to be angling a move to sign Swansea’s prolific playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Sigurdsson, 27, has been in stellar form for the Welsh giants this season, scoring a total nine goals and 11 assists in 30 appearances across all competitions so far. Indeed, he is currently the Premier League’s top provider, leading the leaderboards and leaving prominent names such as Christian Eriksen and Alexis Sanchez behind him.
Such blistering performances are thought to have turned heads over at Everton and West Ham. Indeed, according to the Daily Star, both clubs are eager to sign the player come the summer, as they are equally in dire need of a creative player who can play in centre of midfield or just behind the striker in a number nine role.
Swansea, as it stands, are in danger of relegation. They are currently in 16th place and just three points from the drop.
The uncertainty of their top-flight status means they won’t likely be able to keep players of Sigurdsson’s calibre should they get demoted to the Championship – a fact not lost on either Everton or West Ham.
But the Swans are keen to keep their star player at the Liberty Stadium and have slapped a £30-million price tag on their midfield wizard to ward off interest.
With the former Hoffenheim attacking midfielder having three years left on his contract, Swansea believe they have what it takes to keep Sigurdsson – provided they also keep their Premier League status.
Regardless, it will be interesting to see what happens next in this transfer saga.
