England and indeed Wayne Rooney have yet again been treated as fair game by the baying press today after pictures emerged on the national side’s captain a little worse for wear.
Rooney was pictured alongside teammate Phil Jagieka at a wedding reception a full 24 hours after England’s 3-0 win over Scotland.
After a typically hilarious reaction by the Sun (won’t somebody think of the children), Rooney representatives released the following statement.
And so it reads;
Naturally Wayne is sorry that pictures taken with fans have been published.
Although it was a day off for the whole squad and staff, he fully recognises that the images are inappropriate for someone in his position.
Earlier today Wayne spoke privately to both Gareth Southgate and [FA technical director] Dan Ashworth to unreservedly apologise.
He would like to further extend that apology to any young fans who have seen these pictures.
Whilst you can forgive the FA for wanting to avoid any further bad press to an already rotten organisation, it’s all boringly over the top in our humble opinion.
Whilst the England captain didn’t cover himself in glory, we’d do well to remember he didn’t even feature in the following game against Spain having suffered an already established knee injury.
