Just two years after the men’s side claimed World Cup victory at the famous stadium, Germany claimed Gold in the women’s Olympic final at the Maracana last night, following a hard fought 2-1 win over Sweden.

Whilst the Swede’s pushed heavily for an equaliser, an absolute humdinger of an own goal via Linda Sembrant consigned her side to defeat.
Watch as Marozsan’s superbly struck freekick bounces off the post and on to the wayward feet of the defender.

Painful stuff.
Sweden did get one back, through Stina Blackstenius, and later came close to securing an equaliser . However, the Germans held out and claimed a thoroughly deserved victory, not only for themselves, but for their legendary outgoing coach Silvia Neid.
