We’ve seen this before as Everton fans. The news gets filtered through that we’re interested in certain players, the media get onto it and before you know it social media is in meltdown. Players are being spotted in chippies with ex-Everton defender turned agent Matt Jackson and planes are being tracked in case a striker is on board and on the way to sign a certain contract with Everton.
Witsel is desperate to leave Zenit St Petersburg and the Russians are holding out for a £28m fee. With Everton able to pay that there are surely things happening that will make the Toffees look elsewhere if needs be.
As an Everton fan it is clearly frustrating to see that we finally have money and that we can’t pluck a couple of big names from Europe quickly so as to produce the kind of feel-good factor that would bring a massive boost to the club. As mentioned in the previous article, Ronald Koeman will be happy to do business once he’s had a good look at the squad, but surely he can see immediately that great players can add huge value to the whole club?
Koeman is looking instead at Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho, who is probably still celebrating in some back-street bar in Lisbon at this moment in time following their win in the Euros. At 24 years old and in the position he plays he would be a great fit, although he may want Champions League football too after playing in such a high profile event.
I guess that once Koeman has had a good look at who is available in his squad when in Austria he’ll be able to assess where he needs additional support and how much money he’ll need to spend. For the rest of us it appears to be burning holes in our pockets…
I’m still confident though – remember that you can still get Everton at 12/1 at Bet365 to finish in the top 4 before we sign a few decent players. The odds are bound to drop! Oh, and you get £200 to play with on that link too!
