Match Preview: Tottenham hope to cause upset as Manchester City await

Defending champions Manchester City host Tottenham in their second game of the season for this Premier League match. City will hope they can continue their winning ways following their strong performance in beating West Ham 5-0 in their opening fixture.

Spurs, on the over hand, will be equally keen to show that they belong in the title contention by giving City a hard game and looking to secure an away win. Head to Head

The two sides have played against each other 159 times previously. Historically, results between the two clubs have been fairly even.

Manchester City just about have the upper hand, recording 63 wins to Spurs’ 61. Recent seasons have of course seen a much stronger Manchester City and their last six meetings in all competitions have seen The Citizens lose just once.

The last match between the two teams took place in the Premier League on the 20th of April and finished 1-0 to City. Despite the scoreline, this was a relatively even game.

Phil Foden scored in the first five minutes for Manchester City who were unable to add to their goals despite having the majority of possession. Spurs matched their opponents in the number of shots on target but were unable to find the breakthrough, perhaps because key player Harry Kane was out injured.

Statistics

Pep’s side made short work of West Ham in their opening fixture, smashing the East London club 5-0 as Raheem Sterling scored an impressive hattrick.

The defending champions will be eager to show why they’re considered the favourites again to win the Premier League.

Spurs looked far more sluggish in their opening match, going a goal down against newly-promoted Aston Villa.

Despite having the home advantage, Poch’s side struggled to rhythmically get into the game, conceding within the first 10 minutes. It wasn’t until the 70th minute that new signing Ndombele leveled the scores before Harry Kane showed late on why he’s so important to the North Londoners, scoring two to secure the win.

Team news

Pep Guardiola will be without both left-back Benjamin Mendy and winger Leroy Sane for this match, both of whom are suffering from knee injuries.

Mauricio Pochettino will have to make do without midfielder Dele Alli and center-back Juan Foyth. He’ll also miss forward Heung-min Son, who is serving the last game of a three match suspension.

The two clubs will both want to make a mark with a strong performance in this match. Tottenham will hope to blow the cobwebs off following their shaky start and want to prove that they have what it takes to win the league.

Despite their increased league standing in recent seasons the club has still yet to win a trophy and this is a great opportunity to show they mean business.

Guardiola will hope his side can continue their strong attacking displays and a big win over Tottenham could help Man City enormously in the upcoming title race. Fans will no doubt hope to see Sterling continue his terrific form.

What’s gunna happen?

Both sides play high intensity attacking football so this could prove to be a very exciting game for the fans and neutrals alike. We predict that City will be too much for Tottenham to handle on Saturday, Spurs started their last game very slowly and certainly can’t afford to do the same at the Ethiad. On top of that, Spurs are missing the talents of Son and Dele Alli who would normally pose a great goal threat.

Prediction? 3-0 to City.
