The MLS set to return: 4 things to look forward to

What with the unprecedented interruptions to world events over the last 12 months, finishing the last MLS season was a triumph in itself.

With the challenges of interstate travel almost impossible, the league settled on a controversial mini tournament to wrap things up, with Columbus Crew the eventual season winners.

Officially dubbed “MLS is Back – Opening Weekend 2021”, it seems we’re all set for another campaign, kicking off early April – pending any more potential covid interruptions.

Here are 5 things to look out for.

Heinze in the MLS

A sturdy no-nonsense defender in his playing days, Gabriel Heinze has taken charge of Atlanta United.

The third-ever manager in Five Stripes history, The Argentine takes over from Frank de Boer and his rather tepid spell at the club.

Conjuring a reputation for Marcelo Bielsa-inspired football during his so far short managerial career, Heinze is tipped to bring fast, free-flowing football back to the club.

“This is a milestone moment in Atlanta United history, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome Gabriel as our next head coach,” Club President Darren Eales said. “We cast the net widely for this important hire, and Gabriel quickly emerged as the No. 1 candidate. Gabriel is one of the top coaches in South American soccer and we are delighted that he chose Atlanta United. Whilst his resume speaks for itself, Gabriel’s playing philosophy and commitment to youth development closely align with our ideas at Atlanta United, and we are happy to welcome him as we move into our club’s next chapter.”

A bet on Colorado Rapids?

Americans love their ‘soccer’, which explains why the MGM betting app, BetMGM has been going down so well in states like New Jersey, Colorado, and Tennessee. With that in mind, punters might want to turn their attention to The Rapids.

Okay, not exactly a major headline in most people’s eyes – despite the lack of scintillating football, the side have been building a solid base and improving steadily. They may still be missing a big headline player (see Vela, Higuain etc), still, we tip the side for a top 4 place.

LAFC

With 52 goals in 62 games, Carlos Vela has been a sensation for LAFC. Whilst it’s hardly surprising that a club owned by the likes of Magic Johnson and Will Ferell can attract such highly talented players, Vela has led from the front and added much-needed gloss to the league as a whole.

If the club can manage that sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee, leaving the former Mexico international sidelined for 22 matches last term, Bob Bradley will have high hopes that Columbus Crew can be ousted as league champs.

Beckham and co

Gonzalo Higuain, Blaise Matuidi and Ryan Shawcross – all helmed by the new incoming manager Phil Neville. It’s clear that the David Beckham-owned Inter Miami are going to be the league’s most fun side to watch.

Goals galore or a project waiting to fold in on itself, we have absolutely no idea what’s in store.
