Report: Top goal scorers in the Brazilian Série A

The Brazilian Série A is the equivalent of the English Premier League in Brazil. The top 20 teams from around the country compete to win the title, bragging rights and entry into the Copa Libertadores. In fact, the top six teams will gain entry into the Copa Libertadores, much like the Champions League in Europe.

Just as much as there are ups, there are certainly downs, with the four that finish at the bottom of the table being relegated into the Série B. Palmeiras are the current defending champions and look set for another great season – they are currently joint top with Santos, on 26 points – with 3rdplace Flamengo, five points behind. The Série  A season is already hotting up, with match day 12 (of 38) due to played at the weekend, with games coming thick and fast between now and the end of the season in early December. So, who is currently battling it out for top goal scorer?

We have seen some incredible goals, with Chapecoense’s Everaldo scoring in less than 30 seconds against Atlético Mineiro, and Palmeiras’ Dudu with an incredibly cheeky deflected goal against São Paulo. But who are the top contenders for claiming top goal scorer when the season ends?

The current standings in the table are as follows:

1. Gabriel Barbosa, Flamengo: 8 goals
2. Everaldo, Chapecoense: 6 goals
3. Bruno Henrique Pinto, Flamengo: 5 goals
Kayke, Goiás: 5 goals

Eduardo Sasha, Santos: 5 goals

Pedro, Fluminense: 5 goals

7.Giorgian De Arrascaeta, Flamengo: 4 goals

Bruno Henrique Corsini, Palmerias: 4 goals

When you look at the table of the top goal scorers, it doesn’t necessarily reflect the standings in the league table, showing that those who are at the top have many different players who can put the ball in the back of the net.

Giorgian De Arrascaetais currently the only player to have scored a hat-trick this season which he did against Goiás where the result ended in a 6-1 win for Flamengo.

The all-time top goal scorer in Série A is Roberto Dinamite, who netted 190 goals between 1971 and 1989. 92 of those came during two spells for Vasco de Gama, where he holds the accolade for being the club’s all-time top scorer.

Série A as we know it today began in 2006, with 20 teams competing for one trophy, and since then the best record for most goals scored in one season happened in the 09/10 season and the 10/11 season.

In the 10/11 season it was Borges who was a centre forward that managed to bury 23 goals in total to claim the golden boot. Now retired from the game, Borgesonly played one game for his country, a friendly against Argentina in 2011.

The other player who scored 23 goals in one season is Jonas a second striker who went on to play in Europe for Benfica and Valencia. Jonas appeared 12 times in his country’s shirt including an appearance in the World Cup Qualifier against Paraguay in 2016.

The golden boot is a long-standing tradition in football and it represents a lot of talent, skill and dedication to your team. Most names go down in history as top goal scorers, and with only being halfway through the season, it might be possible for any player to put themselves into the Série A history books
