The Premier League returned from the international break with a bang, with a total of 28 goals scored across ten matches. It had a number of outstanding matches, too. There was a duel between two charismatic managers that ended one-sided. And there was a minnow ending a big-club’s winning streak. Here are the highlights from matchweek Four
City Crush Liverpool at Home
After a week speculation as to which of the two colossal sides would come out on top, Manchester City silenced their doubters by smashing Liverpool 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday. The Citizens have spent lavishly during the transfer window and it appears manager Pep Guardiola has finally got his squad going.
The floodgates opened in the 24th minute, when Citizens icon Sergio Aguero scored the first goal of the match. Sadio Mane would then get sent off after a high foot hits goalkeeper Ederson. This proved to be the catalyst for the crushing that is about to come. With the Reds down to 10 men, City’s wonderkids Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane would each bag a brace to seal the historic win.
Brighton Show Fighting Spirit against West Brom
Despite being tipped as one of the favourites to get relegated come the end of the campaign, Premier League newcomers Brighton and Hove Albion made sure nobody would underestimate them anymore after defeating West Brom 3-1.
German striker Pascal Gross proved himself to be a good buy after scoring two goal in each half. Gross was brought in from Bundesliga’s second-tier side, Ingolstadt, for just £2.7-million. With what he has done on Saturday, he has surely gained for himself new fans. Israeli forward Tomer Hemed would make it three goals come the 63rd minute, while West Brom would get a consolation goal through James Morrison 13 minutes from full time. The win marks Brighton’s first-ever win in England’s top-tier competition in a span of 34 years.
Stoke’s Choupo-Moting Ends United Streak
Overwheming underdogs Stoke City overcame the odds and earned a respectable 2-2 draw against an in-form Manchester United. The Potters are well known for the resilience and perseverance on the pitch and showed it time and again in front of their home fans on Saturday.
Stoke’s Cameroonian centre-forward Eric Choupo-Moting opened the scoring on the 43rd minute, to the delight of the Britannia Stadium faithful. United would bounce back just two minutes later, with Marcus Rashford scoring the goal. Romelu Lukaku would score soon after putting United ahead. However, just six minutes later, Choupo-Moting would once again steal the show and score his second of the game. The match would end all square and Stoke would effectively end United’s 100% win streak.
West Ham Finally Earn First Win
West Ham manager Slaven Bilic certainly had a happy birthday after his side finally clocked in their first win of the season on Monday. His side recorded a comprehensive 2-0 win against Premier League freshmen Huddersfield Town, to the delight of West Ham fans in attendance at the London Stadium.
Both sides were playing carefully during the first half, each unwilling to give their opponents a chance to score. However, the Hammers finally unlocked Huddersfield’s defence come the 72nd minute, when Spanish target man Pedro Obiang scored West Ham’s first goal of the night. Just five minutes later, Speedy striker Andre Ayew would double the home side’s lead, and effectively send Huddersfield into surrender.
