After making the move to Portuguese giants FC Porto following a glittering 16 years as Madrid’s man between the sticks, it seems certain members of the Casillas clan are finding it hard not to stay bitter in light of the Spaniards move.
Madrid issued a gushing tribute on the club site, calling Casillas “the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the club and in the history of Spanish football” as well as “a symbol of the best in our history”.
The tributes have clearly been rather hard to swallow for Casillas’ own mother Mari Carmen. Let’s just say she doesn’t see eye to eye with Madrid president Florentino Perez.
In an interview with Spanish daily El Mundo, Mari commented;
Iker has put up with a great deal, he has suffered psychological pressure and they treated him differently to other players, I have watched him suffer for many years. It is Florentino who is pushing him out because he wanted to end his career at Real Madrid.
No holding back there, things elevate;
Porto is a third-tier team for someone of Iker’s stature,
A world champion can’t end up at Porto. He could have gone wherever he wanted and I wouldn’t have cared if it had been Barcelona because they are gentlemen.
You can bet Iker will be thanking his mum for the dig at his new side.
It can’t be denied the World Cup winners form in the last two years has at times been atrocious, a shade of the keeper he was many moons ago. Lets hope we see a resurgence in the 34 year old’s form whilst at Porto.
It would be nice if he got along with a certain fellow keeper as well.
Perhaps we’re asking too much.
