Paying Respect: Best Man City Players throughout History

Over the past decade or so, Manchester City has emerged as one of the biggest and strongest clubs to ever play football. Their recent success most definitely eclipses their success before the Pep Guardiola and Sergio Aguero era.

Their greatest players ever are ones we have all probably watched and seen why they are regarded as great. Sergio Aguero ran shirtless after securing the title for City back in 2012, which has become a winning football symbol of the game, and cemented his name in the halls of the greats. Here is a list of the greatest Citizens of all time.

Sergio Aguero

Obviously the most prolific goalscorer in the history of the club is number one. Sergio Aguero has scored 182 goals in 274 appearances for the club, and has won almost everything there is to win with them.

He has 5 Premier League titles under his belt while at City, he has won the Football Cup 6 times, and the Community Shield 3 times. He has yet to win a Champions League trophy with them however.

A few years back he even stated that he would not leave City until they won a Champions League trophy. As we all know now, they are in the final against Chelsea at the end of May. Is it written in the stars that Sergio can finish his career by winning the only trophy Manchester City haven’t been able to secure?

David Silva

Widely regarded as one of the best Spanish and best midfielders to ever play in the Premier League, David Silva was the definition of a midfield talisman who ran the game with exceptional passes and runs that more times than not finished with a chance on goal.

He spent 10 years at the Citizens, and in that time he garnered a reputation that put fear in any and every opponent. His 4 Premier League titles are nothing compared to his incredible list of individual achievements.

These include being Manchester City’s Player’s Player of the Season in 2012, being part of the Premier League’s Team of the Decade from 2010-2020, and part of Marca’s Best Team in History.

Vincent Kompany

Captain Fantastic, Vincent Kompany was the glue and the cement that kept City’s defense and team together. Ultra reliable, a defensive master, and sometimes had a goal or two in him, it is hard to say that City would have reached the heights they have without him, that’s how influential he was.

Numerous Premier League titles, FA Cup’s, Community Shields, many believe it was a real shame that he was never part of a Champions League winning team, he is most definitely a City player that deserved to lift that trophy.

Eric Brook

A name many might not be familiar with, but Eric Brook was the Sergio Aguero of the 20’s and 30’s at Manchester. He spent the majority of his career with the team, beginning after WW!, and ending at the start of WW2.

He has been inducted into the Manchester City Hall of Fame, and is also regarded as one of the best English footballers to ever play the game. He scored 158 goals in 450 appearances for the club, tremendous numbers for the time, and also led the club to a FA Cup trophy, a Football League First Division title, as well as a Community Shield win.

Yaya Toure

Yaya Toure, along with Didier Drogba and a few others, are all regarded as some of the best African players to ever play in the Premier League. Many believe that even to this day, Yaya doesn’t get the credit he deserved for his skill and ability in the City midfield.

He scored 62 goals in his 230 appearances for the club, and was famous for his strength, deft touch, the ability to spot a pass, and even his pace sometimes. While many recognise his immense ability, some believe the club he helped so much don’t.

There seems to be a widely held belief that City showed Yaya some serious disrespect towards the end of his time at the club, but still, there isn’t enough praise you can heap on this man for what he did individually and what he did for the club he spent so much time at.

Colin Bell

If Eric Brook was the Sergio Aguero of his time, Colin Bell was the Kevin De Bruyne of his. A midfield maestro, the Englishman played 394 times for the club, scoring 117 goals, once again, insane numbers for a midfielder.

He won 8 titles with Manchester City, including the European Cup back in the 1969-70 season, as well as a Football League First Division title, and 2 Football League Cups. he passed away in early January of this year, but his legacy will most definitely live on forever.

As you can see, Manchester City has been the home of some of the best players to ever play the game, and whether you support them or not, it is hard to say you didn’t love watching them play while they were on the field.
