After rising to fame in the mid nighties as a truly imposing midfield presence for a number of Europe’s great clubs, there is no doubt that Paul Ince can make a well informed decision on what it takes to be the best of the best. Saying that, the odd snippet of comment that seems to escape his mouth every once and a while always seem to raise a few eyebrows.
After playing alongside legends of the game such as Cantona, Shearer and Youri Djorkaeff throughout an illustrious career, it may surprise you to know who exactly the man once nicknamed ‘The Guvnor’ (labeled by himself note) considers to be the crème de la crème, a true footballing genius.
Step forward Stig Inge Bjornebye.
Speaking at a book signing in Norway (okay that might narrow the talent pool a little), Ince was asked about the many Norwegian players he played alongside at Liverpool between 1997 and 1999.
He goes on;
Stig was an amazing player. Maybe the best I played with, because he had the inner drive. The ability to motivate himself. The ability to work hard all the time.
He was not the greatest talent, the most skilful player, but he had something that many of the others lacked: the guts and attitude to do his job.
Possibly the best? Surely a solid performer at best?
Saying that, according to Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer was simply astounding during Liverpool training.
Perhaps it’s time we all took another look at Tony Hibbert?
