Match Report: High-Flying Huddersfield Record Shock Win against Manchester United

Overwhelming favourites Manchester United couldn’t live to their tag on Saturday, as they were felled by minnows Huddersfield Town thanks to two mistakes from Juan Mata and Victor Lindelof.

The Terriers’ Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre managed to get themselves on the scoresheet while United scored a consolation goal through Marcus Rashford.

The loss meant Manchester United have now notched their first defeat in the Premier League this season. And while it is still early in the campaign to say this was the match where the Reds lost the title, three points would’ve been invaluable. Instead, United go home to Old Trafford empty-handed.

The first half started slowly at the John Smith’s Stadium, but things soon escalated with referee Lee Mason dishing out three yellow cards in the first ten minutes of the game. The physical state of play forced United defender Phil Jones out of the contest after injuring his leg while tackling a Huddersfield player.

Phil Jones’ substitution appears to have weakened United considerably in defence. Indeed, just five minutes after the English centre-back left the field to be replaced by new signing Victor Lindelof, the Reds conceded a goal.

Terriers winger Tom Ince shot the ball with pace, with De Gea doing well to execute a save. However, centre-forward Aaron Mooy was there inside the box to claim a poacher’s goal by slotting the ball home on the rebound.

Five minutes later, Huddersfield scored again thanks to a mistake from Lindelof. The Swedish defender misjudged his header, allowing the ball to run past him and giving a chance to Laurent Depoitre. The target man had a clear run at goal and made no mistakes.

United amped it up in the second half, bringing in Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial at half-time. Despite their efforts, the Reds couldn’t quite get the goal they wanted. Huddersfield were defending valiantly and United lacked an incisive pass.

The Reds soon got themselves with a goal on the 78th minute after a sublime cross from Romelu Lukaku meets Rashford in the box, who slots the ball home.

The goal, however, would prove too little, too late as the full-time whistle was blown and Huddersfield record a fantastic win – their first every victory against Manchester United since 1952.
