Considering their exciting title charge under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa just last season, Marseille’s recent fall from grace has been remarkable.
A winless streak of seven matches (and seven months without a home win) has recently left the side 14th in Ligue 1. With the club dangling just 6 points above the relegation zone, it’s clear that the squad need their fans more than ever to get them out of their slump.
Which is perhaps why, during Sunday’s home fixture against Bordeaux, a large section of the home support decided that the famous Benny Hill Theme should be the music of choice when ever a member of their team touched the ball.
Inspiring stuff…..
Okay, well perhaps it was humiliation on the agenda instead…..and that wasn’t all.
Fans also ran through the stadium with 11 giant goat banners, one for each of their incompetent players, and lashed out on club owner Margarita Louis-Dreyfus.
The Widow of former owner Robert Louis-Dreyfus was called “housewife” and “incompetent rich heiress” by larger areas of the notorious Yankee Nord terrace.
The highly charged game ended even more unpleasantly after around 200 supporters had to be dispersed by tear gas.
