Current Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is no stranger to Kimmich, as it was under the Spanish tactician’s watch during his stint as Bayern boss when the Bavarian giants bought the 22-year-old from Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart back in the summer of 2015.
Kimmich quickly found a place in Bayern’s first-team under Guardiola last season, making 36 appearances across all competitions – although he has been used slightly less this season under new manager Carlo Ancelotti.
“It does not matter whether I understand it or not,” said Kimmich when asked about his current situation at the Allianz Arena. “The fact is I’m not satisfied with it and I want to change it.”
The player’s admission of dissatisfaction at life in Bavaria is thought to have alerted Guardiola and his potentially increased chance of signing the young midfielder, according to the Daily Mirror.
Manchester City’s midfield, as it stands, are in dire need of reinforcement. Indeed, while most of the Blues’ playmakers are young, their central midfielders are getting old, with the average age figuring at 29, with Ilkay Gundogan the youngest at 26.
Bringing in a young midfielder like Kimmich would do wonders for Manchester City and would ensure they have a long-term replacement in that area of the pitch.
Of course, Bayern have similar problems, with veteran Xabi Alonso set to retire at the end of the season. In this regard, they will likely fight tooth and nail to keep Kimmich ground in Germany. As such, it remains to be seen how Manchester City will manoeuvre itself and land their transfer target.
