Running the risk of angering the fans of his former club, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is thought to be planning a transfer raid on Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund, with enigmatic playmaker Mario Gotze the main target.
The 24-year-old Gotze made his return to the Signal Iduna Park at the beginning of the season, after a three-year spell with German powerhouse Bayern Munich. While many fans were delighted to see one of their favourites return to the club, Gotze’s performances this season fell short of expectations, scoring just two goals and two assists in his 16 appearances for the club so far.
Gotze’s injury problems this season have certainly not helped his progress in any way. However, it appears the 2014 World Cup winner is finding it difficult to adjust to the tactics of manager Thomas Tuchel, who wasn’t the Dortmund manager during the midfielder’s first run with the team from 2010 to 2013.
The manager that time was Klopp, who now manages Liverpool. And the German manager believes he could rekindle the 24 year old back to mercurial form. Indeed, according to the Mirror, the Anfield boss is eyeing a move for the Dortmund midfielder come the summer, in an effort to inject some creativity and flair in Liverpool’s first team.
Furthermore, it is understood that talks between Liverpool and the German playmaker’s representatives have already taken place and the Reds are confident they are close to sealing a deal in principle.
Dortmund, for their part, will not let their clubman go for cheap, especially after they’ve bought the player from Bayern just last year for £20m. Die Schwarzgelben will most certainly ask for the same amount, perhaps more, if they are to let him go to Liverpool in June.
Gotze, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany after scoring the winning goal in the final against runners-up Argentina, definitely has a chance of re-igniting his game under Jurgen Klopp.
The two know each other and are knowledgeable of each other’s strengths and weaknesses. If there is anyone who can re-ignite Gotze to his blistering form, it’s Klopp – as such, this move from Liverpool for the player is definitely a gamble worth taking.
Gotze’s contract with Dortmund is set to run until 2020.
