Jay Rodriguez comes off the Southampton bench to score his first league goal since rupturing cruciate ligaments

 

Two and a half years since rupturing his cruciate ligaments in a Premier League game against Manchester City at the back-end of the 14/15 season, Jay Rodriguez came off the Southampton bench to score his first league goal since returning to the Saints fold.

With seventy five minutes played, the striker made his appearance at 1-0 down during his sides Stadium of light fixture against Sunderland, ten minutes later Rodriguez popped up and squeezed a low effort under Jordan Pickford, finishing a fine team move, to equalise against the David Moyes led side just five minutes after Jermain Defoe had converted from the spot.

Whilst obvious question marks will be raised on the competence of the Black Cats keeper, it was certainly heart warming to see Rodriguez back among the goals over two years since being included in the England set up for his fine Southampton form.
