Former Wigan defender Steve Gohouri dies at the age of 34 after his body is found in the River Rhine

Former Wigan defender Steve Gohouri, who played for the side between 2010 and 2012, was found dead yesterday after he was reported missing three weeks ago in December.

The 34 year old had attended a Christmas party for German club TSV Steinbach on the 12 of December, he hadn’t been seen since the function. Tragically his body was recovered from the River Rhine, in the western city of Krefeld. Dusseldorf Police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the his death.

A statement read: “On December 31 2015, the corpse of initially an unknown man was found in the Rhine near Krefeld.

“In the meantime, the dead could be identified as the 34-year-old who had been reported missing on December 12 2015.

“An autopsy showed no evidence of violence by third parties.”

After beginning his career playing in the youth teams at CS Brétigny and Paris Saint-Germain, Gohouri had spells in Israel and Switzerland were he would play first team football for seven seasons for Vaduz, where he made his debut in European competition, and Young Boys, where he won a runners-up medal in the Swiss Cup.

After switching to the Bundesliga with Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Ivorian made the move to the Premier League were, during the 2010–11 season, he made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Latics before being released by the club when his contract expired at the end of the 2011–12 season.
