Defoe to return former club in January?

In an absolutely shocking twist of the tale, West Ham are apparently eager to bring in former striker Jermain Defoe to help them stay afloat in their first season at their new Olympic Stadium home. The season has been rough for West Ham, but they are hoping to round a corner in the new year by bringing in some big players like Defoe to help them see out the season. Defoe, no matter what side he is on, has been a proven goalscorer in the Premier League, and West Ham are desperately seeking that.

Sunderland do have a massive hope here in that Defoe is under contract until 2019 with the Tyneside club. As a result, David Moyes and co. have the opportunity to simply resist the move. Or they can even hold this fact above the heads of West Ham, who are in a much more desperate situation. They’ve just moved into a new stadium off the back of a great season, they have Payet, and they can ill afford to be caught in this relegation scrap. So, Sunderland could hold it over their heads and demand money from them that’s a little ridiculous.

Defoe is 34 years old, yet he’s one of the league’s top scorers even in this advanced age. One such idea is to swap him for money and another player. Would Sunderland go for that in order to secure other areas? That is an interesting prospect. If Moyes believes that his side can cope without him, then it is possible that he could shore up his midfield and defense by selling him. There’s no guarantee either way for Sunderland, but this may well determine which league they reside in come next summer.
