Euro 2016: England V Iceland preview

Despite some bumby moments, England managed to get through the group stages with relative. After one important win against Wales and two drawers against Russia and Slovakia, we now move on face underdogs Iceland who have amazed just about everyone (including one very special commentator) with how far they have come. Ninnows they may be, Iceland still represent a stern test and will be putting every ounce of effort into stopping Hodgson’s supply line. Let’s take a look at how England can look to beat them.

Roy’s boys haven’t fully been put under pressure yet, particularly with regards to the defence. Iceland are going to be looking to exploit England’s weaknesses, however we should expect them to struggle in this department due to the strength in England’s midfield.

I think The Three Lions should set up in a similar way to their 2nd half against Wales, 45 minutes in which they showed undeniable intent. Hopefully we should stick to the same midfield as we did in the first and second group games. Wayne Rooney has had two incredibly strong performances within this position and when on the ball he has looked the most calm and composed player,he will be looking to build on this. Another midfielder who has stood out for me this tournament is Tottenham’s Eric Dier. His holding role has been so solid and secure, anything other than keeping him in this position would hugely hinder England’s chances.

To exploit Iceland we should look to control the midfield as well as trying to create a good amount of chances for our more attacking player. We know that on their day England’s attack can beat any defence, Iceland’s in comparison isn’t particularly strong. Hodgson should look to overpower his opponents in attack, get amongst their defence early and try to create real problems which could lead to great chances.

We shouldn’t underestimate Iceland however, they have proved in every games thus far that they deserve to be among the other last 16 teams. They’ve shown great strength and character as well as passion and will be looking to pick weaknesses in English play.

We could see Iceland at times having every man behind the ball attempting to defend the goal for dear life, hoping to form an opening through catching England on the break. They could however come out all guns blazing and attempt to get an early goal to weaken English spirits, either way England have to be wary as any errors could lead to exit from the tournament.

Overall I think that England can win this game and progress into the quarter final, however, strong performances will be needed. Let’s hope for a good game! Leave your score predictions in the comment section below!
