Euro 2016: Wales top the group as England fail to breakdown Slovakia

Wales fans are celebrating jubilantly after their 3-0 win over a poor Russian side meant that they topped Group B with 6 points.

England, very much the bridesmaids, had to settle for a 0-0 draw with Slovakia, largely due to some wasteful possession and superb defending from their opponents.

In similar scenes to their opening encounter with Russia, The Three Lions bossed large areas of the pitch but were unable to penetrate the hordes of defenders behind the ball.

Hodgson opted for 6 changes from their previous win over the Welsh, with Wilshere, Sturridge and Vardy getting the nod. Indeed it would be the Leicester striker who had the matches best opportunity after a rare crack in the Slovakian defence led to a one-on-one situation, the excellent Kozacik keeping the striker at bay.

England’s pushed their opponents however were unable to pull defensive players from their position, making for a drab encounter. The inclusion of Rooney, Kane and Alli looked to rouse the side, however the Slovakians held out for a valuable point, meaning they are likely to also qualify from the group as a third placed side.

A total haul of 5 points mean that Hodgson’s side finish second in the group, meaning a potential encounter with either Iceland, Hungary or, regrettably , Portugal is now on the cards.
