Hoping to secure an impressive top-half finish in the Premier League, West Midlands giants West Bromwich Albion are thought to have placed themselves in the running to secure the services of Chelsea’s out-of-favour defender and Serbian international Branislav Ivanovic.
The 32-year-old Ivanovic has fallen out of manager Antonio Conte’s graces after his abysmal showing in defence during Chelsea’s league match against Arsenal in September, which saw the Blues shamefully lose 3-0.
Since then, Ivanovic has yet to play a full ninety minutes in a league game and the Serbian is understandably unhappy about his situation at Stamford Bridge.
The Serb’s frustrations are something West Brom boss Tony Pulis is keen to capitalise on, it appears. Indeed, according to the Daily Mirror, Pulis is ready to open his chequebook and launch a bid for the player before the January transfer window comes to a close.
While no figure is being touted as of yet, it is believed Pulis are well prepared to table an offer Chelsea could not refuse – effectively hijacking the no nonsense defenders mooted transfer to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
Of course, Ivanovic is a great player with plenty of experience and West Brom stand to benefit from the player’s pedigree. However, it would be best if the Baggies look for other candidates rather than rush themselves into signing the Serbian and here are three reasons why.
Ivanovic has lost his defensive form
While Ivanovic may have been a reliable defender during his prime, his recent performances should discourage West Brom from making a move for the player. Indeed, Chelsea have won only two of their last five games with Ivanovic in the team sheet.
Furthermore, the Blues conceded seven goals during that time – a hefty amount considering Chelsea’s overall calibre. It may not be worth it to gamble on Ivanovic at the moment give his recent lacklustre performances.
Ivanovic is getting old
At the age of 32, Ivanovic’s reflexes, pitch awareness, and decision-making may no longer be as sharp as it once was. This could lead to more mistakes made at the back and could end up costing West Brom a few games and some much needed points.
Added to this, many of the League’s most explosive forwards have smelt blood following some dismal performances. Perhaps the defenders name on the team sheet only serves to gee up any opponents .
Such a risk is too much to take if they would be shelling out cash for the player – his transfer market value is currently believed to be at the £8m ballpark.
Ivanovic’s transfer would cost too much
We already know Ivanovic’s current market value. Now let’s add into consideration his current wages per week, which is set at a reported rate of £65k.
For such a huge sum of money for a player on a downhill path performances-wise, will it really be wise to gamble on Ivanovic? Or will his purchase prove to be a huge bust for West Brom?
