Iceland commentator famous for exuberant viral Euro 2016 celebration loses day job

It really was one of the moments of Euro 2016. With mere seconds left on the clock of their crunch group match against Austria, Arnor Ingvi Traustason popped up to deliver a match winner that sent euphoria around the tiny country of Iceland.

No single person quite summed up the countries joy quite like commentator Gudmundur Benediktsson, who celebrated his side’s achievements thusly.

Whilst his joy at at Iceland’s achievements is unlikely to have subsided, has has however been dealt a swift slap a cross the face by his employer.

Gudmundur is the assistant manager of local side KR Reykjavik. After the sides recent record woefully became five defeats in the past six, manager Bjarni Gudjonsson Eggert decided his services would be best suited elsewhere, with Benediktsson fired from his positions by association.

“From my first day on the job as coach of KR I have focused on the interests of the club as a priority,”

said Gudjonsson.

“After a bad start to the season I, along with the board, concluded that it is in the interests of the team that I resign. I am grateful to the KR board for having trusted in me for the training team. KR’s future is bright and I am confident that the team will get back to the top, where it belongs, before long.”

Whilst the news will no doubt be a bitter blow to Benediktsson, his next duty will be be commentating on England’s match against Iceland on Monday, with the world no doubt waiting to see his reaction if Iceland topple England.
