Javier Mascherano pleads guilty to defrauding the tax man

It seems in the past year or so that being a Barcelona player lends itself to being suspected of tax evasion.

It seems there not even all innocent.

After the high profile investigation into Leo Messi and his father, fellow countrymen Javier Mascherano has pleaded guilty to defrauding Spain’s tax authorities.

It’s reported that the former West Ham and Liverpool player failed to pay €1.5m income tax and undeclared income generated from his image rights during 2011 and 2012.

Mascherano set up a company in Miami and another in Madeira during as, according to the prosecutor, a “strategy aimed at hiding income generated through his image rights”.

Following a decision to previously pay back the amount plus interest under the advisement of lawyers, the battling defender faces a further hefty fine for his crimes.
