Yorke: People of England should applaud Wayne Rooney

Premier League veteran Dwight Yorke believes that Wayne Rooney’s name will always be synonymous with football.

The Englishman became Manchester United’s all time leading goalscorer after netting a free-kick against Stoke City, taking his tally for the club to 250.

Having reached another milestone in his career, ex-United striker Yorke claims he should have earned the admiration of any football observer in the country.

“He is right up there,” he said.

“The record he just broke has been there for over 40 odd years, he has to be one of the all time greats.

“He’s won European cups, he’s won the Premier League, he’s won the FA Cup, he’s won the EFL [cup].

“I think that people of England and the media should really applaud him.

“I just think that the guy is such a legend…we often use the name ‘legend’ – he certainly comes into that category.

“You look at Sir Bobby Robson and Denis Law and the late George Best, I think the Wayne Rooney name will be around for a long time as well.”

The Red Devils host Hull City at Old Trafford on Thursday morning.
