Match Report: Chelsea Clinch All Three Points at Everton’s Expense

Despite all the players they brought in during the summer and spending no less than £125-million, Everton were unable to overcome the collective strength of current league champions Chelsea as the London giants defeated their Meyserside counterparts 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

The home side started things out in superb attacking fashion, creating chances at will and enabling the likes of Pedro and new signing Alvaro Morata to have a decent crack at goal. Everton’s Idrissa Gueye saw yellow at early as the ninth minute, with the Toffees forced to keep defending. All their offence quickly found a breakthrough on the 27th minute. Morata’s headed pass finds fellow Spaniard Cesc Fabregas inside the box, who slots home the opening goal of the game.

Everton realised they needed to move fast if they are to get anything from this match and as such immediately went on the attack. Their newest player Gylfi Sigurdsson had a couple attempts on goal, but both eventually fell in the safe hands of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. However, despite finding an equaliser, the Toffees found themselves facing a two-goal deficit before half-time as Morata turns from provider to scorer this time round, smashing the ball in with a thunderous header.

The second-half proved to be much less eventful than the first. While Ronald Koeman’s charges tried to push open through Chelsea’s defence, they found themselves unable to find that incisive final touch. The away side came close to scoring one back through strikers Sandro Ramirez and old boy Wayne Rooney, to no avail.

As the match went on, it was clear to see Chelsea’s change in tactics. The Blues of London have decided to shut up shop, and they are doing a very good job repelling Everton’s advances. Toffees midfielder Ashley Williams has been in the thick of things in the last hour of the game, notching a number of attempts on goal, but he couldn’t find the back of the net.

Chelsea was eventually able to close the game out, securing a second consecutive Premier League win and all three points in front of their own fans at Stamford Bridge.

A quick look at the stats would show that the London giants have dominated this game all throughout, with Everton unable to notch even a single goal on target. This should be enough warning for Everton – despite all their business during the transfer window, there is still a lot more they need to do.
