Being one of the worlds top all round midfielders for the best part of three years now, Marco Verratti has largely been deemed untouchable when it comes to his purchase whilst being employed by the world richest club.
Even though just weeks prior he had commented “I’m not leaving Paris until I win a Champions League”, speculation that the Italian may actually be close to a transfer away from PSG has become rife with Chelsea the hot favourite for his signature.
Blues boss Antonio Conte has worked at close proximity with Verratti during his stint with the national side, and is seemingly undetered by the massive 5 year contract recently signed with the Ligue 1 champions. As reported by ESPN, The fact that his agent, Donato Di Campli, has suggested the player will seek to move away from the club if they fail to win any silverware just a month prior may indeed encourage a genuine offer.
Still just 24 years of age, Verratti has performed a sterling job in the heart of the PSG midfield. Compared to Andrea Pirlo at a young age, the deep lying stocky midfielder is famous for his exemplary touch on the ball. Partnered with superb technique, and ballsy ability to keep the ball in even the most difficult of positions (he kept Yohan Cabaye out of the team remember) is a seemingly infinite engine.
It’s perhaps this willingness to run himself into the ground that has made him the perfect replacement for Cesc Fabregas, a player seen as somewhat of a luxury under Conte’s reign.
Whilst no talk has been made of a potential transfer fee as yet, given the remaining years on his contract, a fee upwards of £60m would not be that surprising.
