Robbie Keane retires from Republic of Ireland duty with stunning ‘Gazza-esque’ goal against Oman

Robbie Keane played his final Republic of Ireland game during a comfortable 4-0 win over Oman, a warm-up before the World Cup qualifier against Serbia.

Goals came via the man himself as well as finishes by Robbie Brady and Jonathan Walters (2).

True to form, the countries record goal scorer signed off in fine fashion with a Gascoigne like effort to make it two-nil – a finish that in fact drew him level with German legend Gerd Muller on 68.

With the game all but won, Keane received a rousing ovation when he was substituted after 56 minutes, signing off after a quite astounding 146 caps.

Speaking to eir Sport after the match, Keane commented: “It was very tough – it was an emotional night for me.

“I just want to thank everyone who came along to support me and tell them that I’ve enjoyed every minute of my 18 years with the team.

“Everyone wanted me to score and I’m delighted to finish off in this way.

“I look forward to now sitting back and watching the team as a fan.”

Great stuff.

A fitting send-off for one of Ireland’s greatest ever players….
