New FA chairman Greg Clarke labels clock counting down to England WC 2022 win as a ‘Joke’

With his predecessor already seemingly a faint figment of our imagination, newly settled-in FA chairman Greg Clarke has brandished one of his legacies as ‘a joke’.

Greg Dyke had a clock installed at England’s training headquarters upon his appointment in 2013, showing a countdown to England winning the 2022 World Cup – a move seen by many at the time as a grand symbol of the FA’s delusion.

Clearly not wishing to consider the clock as anything but a bit silly, Clarke regularly laughs the sentiment out of the room at a moments notice.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the FA’s new head honcho commented on the time piece.

That clock’s daft. If you’ve seen that nuclear clock back in the Cold War, it’s been one minute to midnight for the last 55 years!

These things are a joke. I like a few jokes, I like a good laugh, so I’ll go up to St George’s Park and have a good laugh at the clock.

If he thinks that’s funny, pretty sure he’ll be bowled over when he realises Dyke would have been nothing but completely serious.
