The new Mascherano? Footage suggests Pep may be playing Fabian Delph in defence #MCFC

Since appearing on the scene as young manager at Barcelona, Pep Guardiola has maintained a very precise footballing philosophy built around technically competent players.

With ball possession nine in the tenths of the law, burly no nonsense defenders are often sacrificed for ball playing centre-half’s – if none are available, Pep’s more than willing to let a midfielder have a go.

With Javier Mascherano the shining example of this, perhaps it’s unsurprising that a couple of Manchester City midfielders have become key candidates for the ‘ol switcheroo.

Officially taking the reigns a week ago, Guardiola has been busy splitting his training groups into midfielder and defender categories. As highlighted by the below tweet, centre midfielders Fabian Delph and Fernando have been involved with the latter.

If anyone was to be considered able enough to transform into a centre half, we would be more than willing to entertain Fernando, but Delph has us rather bemused. Perhaps the side are about to receive a new wing back.
