Carlos de Pena signs for Boro – only after crashing his car in Uruguay

The absolute farce that is transfer deadline day can leave heads spinning. Like recreational drugs, it’s probably best not to use heavy machinery until all he madness has dissipated.

Uruguayan winger Carlos de Pena was unable to heed that stern advice after, prior to signing for Middlesbrough, crashing his car in the build up to his big move.

With the final touches of the deal slowly being sorted, De Pena booked a plane ticket from Montevideo straight to Teeside. The 23 year old was rather miffed when told on his way to the airport that the deal hadn’t been ok’d by his club Nacional.

On driving home the winger managed to crash his vehicle with his dear old mum beside home at the wheel. luckily neither parties were seriously injured.

De Pena was then informed the deal was back on, so he subsequently dusted himself off before driving to that airport once again.

South American correspondent Tim Vickery, commented to the BBC:

On Monday, the club got a call from his agent saying he is on his way to England. The player drove off and promptly got himself in a car accident with him and his mother in the car.

Nothing serious as he was allowed out of hospital pretty soon after and he left his mum there, went back to the airport and flew to Middlesbrough.

Before signing off brilliantly with;

I can’t remember anyone being so desperate to get to Middlesbrough since Chris Rea was driving home for Christmas.

Lovely stuff.
