Flashback: David Wetherall and Bradford City’s miraculous Premier League escape of 2000

With much of the League’s players already having one foot very much on the beach, spare a thought for those with Premier League survival in the balance. Newcastle, Hull, Leicester and Sunderland all could still be playing Championship football next year, whilst the parachute payments will be generous, its still along arduous season down there.

Perhaps a timely remainder of a quite superb Premier League escape can give some encouragement to some of you suffering fans out there.

Here’s Bradford City’s very own great escape…..

14 May 2000 – Bradford City 1-0 Liverpool

With Bradford facing relegation after six consecutive defeats at the back end of the 1999/2000 season, Paul Jewell’s sides survival campaign quickly gained paced with wins at Sunderland and relegation rivals Wimbledon. A penultimate Premier League season fixture with Leicester City, in which they lost 3-0, however had very much taken the wind out of the West Yorkshire side.

With Liverpool to play in front of a lively home crowd, and a win along with a defeat for the Dons a must, not many would have picked out former Leeds United defender David Wetherall to be the sides saviour.
